Back around 2004, I traveled to Richardson Texas to attend a HP training course. I had a chess computer with me and the teacher of the class noted it. Next day, he brought in a chess set that he picked up at a local store.

We played at lunch and in the evenings. We even went to bookstores to look at chess books. I never beat him. He offered me a draw once, which I accepted.

After the class ended on the Friday, he asked to play my computer and put it on a higher setting.

As he played the computer, he talked a lot about chess and his travels, including “going to the Philippines with Korchnoi.”

I was stunned. The guy was some high-level master.
He admitted to holding back so as to not intimidate me.

I joined chess.com last year; so only recently remembered that guy.
I recall he was tall, thin, white; had a beard.
If anybody knows who he might have been—obviously limited info—or knows him, please reply to this post.

Even if no one knows who he might be/have been, I think this is a cool memory.
