Most Popular Player at the Chess Tournament

I just realized that I must be the most popular player at the chess tournament. Everybody knows they can beat me. Even the six year old kid, whom I'm sure gets beat alot, looks forward to playing me. I have been preparing for his Petrov with 3 Nc3, but still he shall prevail. I hope his chess coach isn't reading this. I live in the fear wrought by probably suffering yet another loss to this young prodigy. The other players should buy me consolatory mochas from Starbucks because I'm a guaranteed win for them. God save me from the fury of the players at the chess club!

Hmm? You know, now that you mention it, I think I'm the most popular chess player at my local chess. There are probably three reasons for this though:

1) Our local club is fairly small and really everyone knows everyone anyway

2) I probably stand out a bit more because I usually wear a suit or sport coat (kind of like Carlsen, Nakamura, So and all the other top players in those FIDE high-level events)

3) I'm friendly happy.png I try to make small talk with everyone and simply being welcoming probably gets people to remember you more.

I tried friendly small talk but the guy next to me kept telling me to be quiet. Half of what I was whispering was game related and between me and my opponent but I kept getting hushed. I thought it was a rule so I looked it up last night and could only find rule 20G which doesn't say you have to be silent. It seems you're only allowed to say five things: "I adjust, check, check mate, I offer a draw and I resign." I say, "I resign," a lot. But I think you can say other things like when my opponent said to me, "That's my piece."

I think you would actually have to play well to get away with wearing a blazer. You're rated expert so you can get away with it. It would be laughable for me to wear a coat and tie. Blue jeans and a tee shirt are more like it.

My rating isn't really 1200. When I play another 20 games you'll see what a dumpster fire my game is. But that's okay, I just want a rating. That's why I'm going to the club. Then I'll tell Chess.com what my real rating is so they can adjust it. I wish they could adjust it now but we really don't know what it is. My opponents should look forward to playing me. I know the people at the chess club are.

To be clear, my small talk is more between games (especially before the first round begins) and not so much DURING games when it could be a distraction to others.

As for what I wear, it isn't rating dependent; it works for me because it fits my regular style of what I usually wear. I wear dress shirts (like business casual) often, so putting on a sports coat over it is a small add-on from my baseline. I wear clothes like this often because I'm comfortable in them and it is what I like.

By the way, most of the time I'll wear a sport coat over a dress shirt, but there is a difference among: suits, sport coats and blazers. I could wear all three, but usually it is a sport coat and some less formal than others. YouTube channel Gentleman's Gazette is one of my favorites and they explain the differences well here if you are interested happy.png
