Otah : I follow chess info for years already but did not hear about a championship in online chess on this source ( this site ), but yes there are a lot of on line tournaments on chess.com.
In countries : yes, we in Holland ( the Netherlands ) have a championship in online chess, but what is " official " ? It is all new and developing.
