people abandoning games instead of resigning

Hi guys

In 10 minute games it seems every second player will abandon a game instead of resigning.

I thought it would stop as i went up in rank but it is still there.

Surely this sort of bad sportsmanship could be easily detected and punished?

Anyone had similar experiences?

Yes, its always the same. A very few players actually resign, most of them are just waisting time or abondoning the game. Poor behaviour.

My pet hate. Why do so many do that? It’s just bad manners. Why can’t Chess.com do something about it?

yea, happens sometimes but its nice that you can just start another game while the clock is running down or do puzzles or something. Chess.com so versatile

This is complete nonsense. There is no connection between the two things. And no one owes you a rematch. That's just all in your head, it has nothing to do with reality.

You remind me of that guy, who thinks people who don't rematch are scared, which is not true. Fym your win means nothing if you can't repeat it? Yeah, sure, but that doesn't only apply in rematching. Also what if we don't want to rematch? Does that affect anything? I can just find another one to play chess with and repeat my win.

It's most likely due to tilting, it's still very annoying and should be punished.

Shut up with your pretentious nonsense. You and I both know this is EXACTLY why they do it. They know they're not going to get the rematch, so the smallest victory they can get is to make you wait. 2051 in blitz, and you couldn't figure that out, really? You're not owed a quick victory either. Wizen up and start acting right. Your opponent isn't going to act decent if you're not.

I block people who deliberately disconnect when they start losing so the game is abandoned after 60 seconds. I have no desire to play them again.

They can't handle losing and just walk away.

I give rematches and win again more often than not...nevertheless the whole subject of Rematches is a tired subject, argued by both sides ad nauseum on here...

It really is bad. They should implement a system where if you abandon games you get penalized in some way. Seems so easy to correct. Abandon 3 games and you get relegated in some way or get a 20 pt rating penalty.

Avatar of GeorgeGoodnight

Lichess bans people for doing that.

Avatar of zhengsean

That happens to me sometimes as well

Great idea. I think a rating-related penalty is the way to go, if you let your clock run down - why not DOUBLE the rating loss? + or - 8 becomes -16.

Avatar of SixInchSamurai

As it was mentioned in #18, lichess solves the problem very effectively by automatically restricting people so that the cant play within some time, and if they keep stalling the time increases

Avatar of Chess147

The problem with a rating penalty is that members would collude to abuse the system.

Just as in life, you have NO idea what's going on at the other end. A phone call, a child crying, an angry parent or spouse. So relax, play a puzzle in another window (if you're on a computer), or read a news feed if you're on you're phone. There are a lot of worse things that could happen to you, than have to wait a couple of minutes.
