piece being taken and pre moves

Why does a piece being taken cancel a pre-move, even if the piece being taken doesn't lead to an illegal move?

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't. If you're hovering a piece over a square, which isn't a premove, then that can force you to grab the piece again.
