A dace is any of a number of species of small cyprinid fish. The unmodified name is usually a reference to the common dace (Leuciscus leuciscus).

You bully! Leave those dace alone! (Pink Floyd plays in the background).

lol-perhaps king fork would like to take back his comment about dace?

no takebacks.   with takebacks, we wouldn't learn from our mistakes.

No I don't think it would be nice, I think it would be dumb. Stick to playing Chessmaster if you want that.

no takebacks in rated play, the game would last forever-how far back would one wish to go, over and over!

It looks like the consensus is against takebacks. I was playing a game a week ago on here and my opponent made a very obvious bad move, losing his queen for nothing. It was early on, and I would have offered a takeback just because I felt like the game was "deflated" after such an easy gain.

I do appreciate likesforest's  philosophical view on the topic though - takebacks are a bog one should avoid.

I wouldn't have put it quite that way myself, but the sentiment is clear - no takebacks except that is in 'takeback' chess. That's the chess variant where, whatever your opponent moves, you may request he plays an alternative move (if one exists). Love.

the only way takebacks sound good to me is if you takeback you agree to a loss and continue the game on unrated.

Erik,

I have never had any time for taking back moves... it destroys the unforgiving nature of chess. I do think though, a facility for unrated play that allows take-backs would be a boon, especially for those involved in the learning/teaching process.

When teaching is done face-to face the better player taps the top of his piece when a learner leaves a piece en prise...this process will occur many times in one game. Online, with no take-backs, due to the present finality of each and every move, the game is usually spoilt by move 5. Some posts in this forum have mentioned that there are still things to be learnt in lost positions and this is true, however, it's not premium use of anyones time. I like to show people how not to lose pieces! The present teaching facilities are both frustrating and overly time consuming, in my humble opinion. The "play" aspect of your logo is well catered for, let's see a little more "learn". I hope you appreciate me "sharing" this with you.

p.s. Great site, well done...keep up the good work soldier! Smile

How about allowing takebacks in unrated games where there's a big gap in the players' ratings? Say 500 or more. Obviously, I mean letting the lower-rated player take moves back.

Tactics. Being outplayed by your opponent.

Study some games of the masters. All their moves might not be the absolute strongest move objectively, but very few are blunders.

Nilesh,

Under your online chess options, there is an option to play touch move or click a 'submit' button. If you want, you can use the option where you have a submit button. Then you can make the move you want to, look it over, and then submit it.

The solution (to me) is as simple as it is obvious: he should resign.

Blunders happen; you live with them or it's no longer a game but an analysis. Since it was "early on," at least there was little investment in the game.

I think that I've heard two good idea (imho) on this forum.  One, to make a new type of game called 'Teaching,' where the game is unrated and takebacks are allowed.  Expanding on that, why not make an extra option on the page for a new game?  Make a "Game Type" option, with three options.  One, Normal; Two, Teaching; and Three, Tournament.  Each one would have different options.  The Normal would be the same as the games now are, the Teaching would have the qualities listed above, and the Tournament would be rated and touchmove, with no takebacks allowed.

I also agree with Erik; if you want to take back a move (unless it's in a Teaching game), you should accept a loss and continue on with the rest of the game being unrated.  That way, both players can enjoy the game, but it doesn't quite break the rules.  Actually, it probably does breaks the rules, but it's better than allowing a take back, and then that person wins the game and gains points.

Another drawback to allowing takebacks on the server is that some people then feel entitled to a takeback and when they offer and are declined they resort to insults. I have had this happen to me a lot on other servers as I never grant takebacks, and never ask for them.

Yeah, one guy on instantchess.com really started hurling the abuse when I wouldn't give him his Queen back.

I came from other sites which allowed takesy-backsies (read: yahoo! games) and I have to say the lack of the option has improved my game and ultimately brought me more enjoyment.

However, I think that take-backs are an important part of teaching to help someone understand a position/tactics better.  So I agree with allowing them in unrated games only! (the 'chess explorer' idea could work too, but how do you implement an interactive explorer?  If this were feasible I'd agree to this instead of my other suggestion.  I think only one is necessary for teaching purposes)
