A few days ago, a Spanish newspaper ran a story about Isai Scheinberg, founder of PokerStars, who at the end of 2021 signed an agreement with FIDE to organize the next Candidates tournament. Back then, we were also informed that chess.com would be the main sponsor of the event.
But what caugh my attention was that the article also said Mr. Scheinberg and his son had taken part in the development of chess.com. As these two men have millions to spare, I guess what the journalist meant was that they had invested in this site. I usually do not trust the (Spanish) press, but a quick search seemed to confirm it. However, even if this were not the case, the idea which I am about to explain would still stand.
I am certain Mr. Scheinberg must be convinced he has helped make the world a better place. Without PokerStars and its competitors, many people would not be aware of their love for gambling. They would have never stepped into a casino, in fear they might be assaulted by scammers or ladies of dubious reputation if they did. Virtual casinos have made luck available to everyone.
Unfortunately, I am not among them. I do not like poker or blackjack. The roulette is hypnotic, but it takes no skill. I cannot find a good reason to play in a casino or in any of those gambling sites.
This is depressing. I have almost all the traits of a good ludopath. I am compulsive, I am obsessive... but my otherwise perfect personality has a flaw. I could be a good gambler, if I only I liked gambling.
But when I was reading that article, I had an epiphany. Rejoice, everyone! Welcome to online chess gambling! You could bet on your own game, raise in an equal position if you feel daring, call or reraise if you think you are winning! Very convenient, you will no longer need to go to Central Park to get stripped of your money by playing chess.
It would be a wonderful addition to our collection of plagiarized useless features. Downvotes from Reddit. Leagues from e-sports. NFTs from crypto communities. Gambling from PokerStars . Nothing could possibly go wrong.
