Vacation Abuse III

Reservesmonkey

Why do we need vacation on 7, 10, and 14 day games? I'd argue that we don't need it on 5 either but OK, you can have it. I don't think there has been a time in the 10 years I've been on the internet that I didn't log on once in 14 days. If you're rich enough to go on a cruise for that long, you can pay for a satellite uplink to finish your games. If you can't make it on every week or two, maybe you shouldn't be playing online correspondence chess right now. Maybe blitz or lil chess partner would be better. I've taken vacation for a long weeked, but a month? This isn't Karpov-Kasparov, the outcome isn't that important to keep games going over 40 day vacations. The guy I am playing who has taken a month of vacation rather than accept a mate in one because he will drop below 1600 is the perfect example of this abuse.

then I think you're a bit addicted to internet if you even feel the urge to log on while being on vacation. What's the purpose of vacation then if you can't even live without internet for 14 days..

or we could speak about your abuse of the draw option. i'm sick of you constantly asking for draws, taking the max amount of time to take a turn, and then disabling every way for me to communicate with you just because i'm beating you fair and square!

you are definately not the person to be accusing people of cheating and abusing the vacation option! all you do is whine about other people while being a sore loser. get over yourself! so why don't you stop whining and make a freaking move in our game before you find yourself in the title of a forum bashing you!!!

that he's clearly online with no other moves to take in other games, and he doesn't take moves until it gets down to the last couple hours. this guy is nothing but a whiner! normally, i don't bash people like this, but seriously this guy is pissing me off! he sits there and complains about "vacation abuse" and then accuses Izo of being a cheater while he plays like a whiney sore loser who can't take losing fair and square. he even says in this forum that "The guy I am playing who has taken a month of vacation rather than accept a mate in one because he will drop below 1600 " while he is taking his sweet time to not move in our game just because he is going to lose. all the while, he is constantly asking for draws when i clearly have the upper hand. he's the one putting off losing!

It just makes me mad when people are so HYPOCRITCAL! i'm calling you out reservesmonkey. GET OVER YOURSELF!

You're calling me out? Sounds like a threat which is being reported to chess.com. I have moved 14 times in 6 days which is well within the agreed to one move every three days. If you don't like correspondence chess, try the live chess server, if you can think that fast.

You definitely would not say that to my face...by the way, learn to spell or at least use spell check. Isn't Jr High on Christmas break yet?

Honestly, why do you care about how soon you get claim a win? The win will come eventually. Personally, while I do enjoy maintaining a steady rating which requires winning games regularly (as well as losing), I think that much more pleasure would come from knowing that someone is altering their internet habits for an entire month to avoid (delay!)losing to me.

My bigger pet peeve is people needlessly repeating forum topics. Stop making our forums sloppy! There is already a thread for this.

i say lower the vocation to about 15 days, or have the option of starting games in which vocation cannot be used(like being able to check a box), that would fix the problem.

Thank you for your rational response Tunatin, while we disagree you responded as a human being. Unlike others, who resort to ad hominen attacks. I will no longer be posting to these boards because the animals are taking over...

"have the option of starting games in which vocation cannot be used(like being able to check a box)"

I, for one, would never play a game where vacation can not be used. Games can easily go for 2-3 months, sometimes longer. No way I'm signing up for a game that I'll have to resign because it takes so long it runs into a time I am away from the internet.

bradyj
maybe if you fore see your vacation coming, you could just finish all your games! I personally don't care for the 7,10, or 14 day games, however tunatin has good points. And quite frankly i (and I think I speak for many others) am tired of seeing people whine about Vacation abuse, it's yours to use as you see fit. now play chess!
Loomis

" maybe if you fore see your vacation coming, you could just finish all your games!"

Unfortunately, this requires the cooperation of your opponents. If they only move every few days, a game will last a few months. So, you can't always just finish all your games.

Reservesmonkey
Very well, I will sit down and shut up. Abuse your vacations, use your vacations wisely, whatever...I too am weary of all this talk of vacations. Anyone who I play who takes vacation and abuses it gets a free win as I will resign. Goodbye.
bradyj
you do have a good point, Loomis. Hence the birth of vacation time. I try to stay away from the 5,7,10,or 14 day games, but even the 3 day games can seem to go on forever.
Loomis

tunatin, I understood that it would be an option, my point is that virtually nobody would use that option. If an unnamed users, let's call them "RM" wants to play games where no vacation is allowed, they will likely find no opponents to play with. I also think RM might think it's a good option to start a game with no vacation time, but sooner or later RM wants to take one day off (I don't know, maybe playing internet chess isn't exactly a Christmas tradition in RM's home country) or a weekend trip and will be forced to resign or lose on time. My guess is that RM takes a real vacation someday and since these games can go for months, there's really no way to start a game and be sure it won't last until your vacation.

There are a lot of features in the works here at chess.com (according to Erik in other feature request threads), and they just don't have time to implement every little feature that would make a couple people happy.

I guess the "No Vacations" option would similar to "No Escape" on FICS and ICC. If some people want to play that way, that's fine with me, but I would never choose it because I do occasionally take vacations and go on business trips. How many users would?

ChessDweeb
Hillarious. The rules are the rules. Each opponent knows them when they begin. So why should either person get bent out of shape? Anyway, I looked at the game and although at higher levels it is definitely a loss. BUT.........at our level anything's possible. I wouldnt resign a game where I might be able to squeak out a draw. Besides, you learn a lot about defense playing down material. Enjoy it, embrace the experience. Don't let anybody steal your joy from playing. And never give up!
Loomis

tunatin, I can see the point that adding an extra option generally doesn't hurt. But I envision the following scenario:

Day 1. RM is upset because his opponent goes on vacation when RM is winning.

Day 2. RM starts all this games with no vacation allowed to avoid those poor sports.

Day 40. One of RMs opponent's is only moving once every 3 days and RM will be out of town in the coming week.

Day 41. RM spews vitriol on the forums because his opponent is abusing the no vacation option by delaying the game when RM has told his opponent he needs to finish the game before going out of town.

ithinkyourespiffy, you titled your game "Only play if you'll stay online to finish!"  and ReservesMonkey accepted but now he's playing slower in a bad position. I don't have any advice for the current game, but in the future perhaps use the chess.com LIVE chess option where you can enforce (rather than request) that your opponent finishes before he goes offline. When I play correspondence I usually choose the faster 1 day / move.
