Vote Chess - Chess.com vs. a Grandmaster!

Sort:
Rael

I'm actually really looking forward to this - I think it will prove to be a very interesting game. We should request of the GM that after the game is over he or she will publish an article including their game annotations for us, and perhaps even comment on the discussion thread we have after the game as well.

I'm really curious about who it will turn out to be... this is going to be a neat opportunity.

As as per winning - if I was the grandmaster I think I'd be a tad intimidated to play a whole site of people, if you think about it from the GM's standpoint. I think our chances will be owing to our leadership - the people who vote should take the game seriously and make sure to read through the thread and test out variations on our own...

Let's not conceed defeat already, is what I'm saying. Let's get geared up for this opportunity and represent chess.com to the best of our ability!

I have a request for this vote chess game.  Normally, I am able to be online for one out of every 3 Vote Chess Moves as a result of my timezone.  However, I would like to be able to have input into every move if Chess.com is going to be versus a GM.  Perhaps the Time Controls could be every 24 hours, instead of a smaller time frame?

I can't believe how many people on this site actually believe that they can beat a GM together. I hate to break the news to you people, but you will get crushed faster than you can tip your King.

Let me ask you people, do you really think that you could beat your average computer program? (I'm not talking about Fritz, Shredder, etc.; I'm talking about your average master-level program.) Let me be blunt here. You wouldn't have a chance unless Satan moved into an igloo. And since GM's are stronger than regular master-level programs, you'd better start saying your Hail Marys.

It is interesting to theorize about possible tactics for both sides... for instance, would the GM want to draw us into a game wherein there are a lot of possible lines to follow and therefore confuse us? The way I see it, the more good options we have open to us as far as lines go, the worse off we are. We should begin prepping now and discussing ideas (of course we don't know what side we'll be), but think for a second: do we want a sharp game with lots of tactical abilities? I'd like to hear some people weigh in on this, hopefully some of our highest ranking comrades will be participating. So being theoretical for a moment, what kind of game would we like to draw a grandmaster into? The main thing we have in our favor is man-power... so we actually can follow down lines in the thread and post them. Comeon guys, let's start brainstorming our options!

It doesn't matter what we believe. We're grateful for the opportunity to try.

Fisher, you have a good point, and I hear you.

But listen - the game is going to happen. Do you think we should a) resign outright or b) tell Erik that we'd rather turn the opportunity down altogether?

Sheesh. We may lose, but comeon, this is an intersting opportunity. Even if we lose (which, yes, looks likely) we still have the option of proving that chess.com members don't fold easily. I think it would be a victory to even slightly challenge the man/woman. We have to represent the site.

An plus, Fischer, what do you hope to do with your comments? I mean, you could just be being realistic - or maybe you're a plant on the part of the GM to try to break our will pre-game! Haha.

But in all seriousness - we're going to play the game, so you don't need to tell us it's lost off the bat. If I played Anand in real life, I'd be certain to lose. Does that mean I'd turn down the opportunity to try at all? I don't think so.

Would you?

Exactly. Which is why I don't understand why some here are so focused on "winning" when they should be focused on the opportunity itself, since it's such a rare opportunity being given them.

Rael, good comment. I apologize if I got anyone down about the game. I was just being realistic. For example, if I had the chance to play Shaquille O'Neal one-on-one, I would jump at the opportunity. But I would certainly not tell people that I would win because I'd get crushed easily.

I guess I'd just like others to be more realistic themselves about the upcoming game and enjoy it for what it is, and not because they're going to win. I say to them.....just have fun, give your best effort, enjoy the rare opportunity, and for goodness' sake, don't worry about winning!

Fischer have you ever heard the joke about the naval captain trying to keep morale high with his crew? Well, whenever the captain was about to go to battle, he would yell to a crew member to bring him his red shirt. After a few battles, his first mate questioned the reason why he always asked for his red shirt. It was speculated that it was for good luck, but the captain told him that it was not the case and the reason was that he didn't want his crew to see him wounded. It would hurt morale. No matter the odds, the crew had to believe they had a chance. Whether it was two opposing ships or even three, the captain would shout for his red shirt, and acted fearless while his crew rallied behind him. One day he encountered a fleet of pirate ships. He shouted "Bring me my brown pants!"

Rubbish. GMs lose all the time.

To other GMs, that is.

Our collective wisdom may be enough to beat one (is it definitely Anand?) if we plan and communicate well enough.

A GM playing hundreds of under- rated players will be a walk in the park. He might have to play blindfolded.
