Why are messages delayed by over a month?

I have had multiples instances recently where I have sent a private message to a user, and only receive a response much later, sometimes over a month later.  For example, yesterday I got a message of "ty" in response to my message of "good game" 25 days earlier.  I also received another message 8 hours ago in response to something I sent on April 26th.   And there are more examples going back.  This is quite mystifying to me.  These messages were not the kind of thing that someone would ruminate on for a month only to respond with one line.  Is there some kind of server delay in message relay?

I've had multiple people tell me they didn't get notifications for messages for some reason and then only saw them later....is it possible also that those users you referred to don't go on chess.com that often?

Moderators can't really answer that with any certainty. Sometimes people get too many messages, ignore them, or maybe use the app and don't really pay attention to them at all. So it could be something like that.

I got a reply 6 days ago to a message I sent in July of 2020. Apparently the member just didn't really look at all messages.

I once found a friend request that had been sent to me 1 year ago... probably accidentally closed the window or something and chess.com thought I'd seen it, so the alert disappeared.
