Why Are The 3D Sets Harder For Some To Look At Than Others?

I mean I get a lot of it comes down to personal preference, but I'm curious. A couple of times now, I asked for game analysis (both in personal message and in forums) and have gotten the "I need to convert it to 2D so I can see what's going on here. I don't mind, but I'm curious why.

I personally use the 3D Staunton set because it's just easier for me to work with personally. Looks more like an actual board to me. Yeah I'm not physically moving the pieces but it kinda "feels" like it to me if that makes sense. I can understand that it may be jarring to others though because I feel similarly about the 2D board than they do about the 3D one, but I'm curious as to why.

Like genuinely I'm just assuming it's because of the realism of the board that I prefer 3D as well but I honestly don't know why I prefer it either. I can play on 2D boards too but I just don't seem to do as well and as aformentioned it just feels off to me.

Even when I was new to chess, I hated them.

Even when I was playing both online and OTB regularly (so 2D vs 3D didn't matter to me) I didn't like the digital 3D boards... I'm not sure why this is.

Yeah it's interesting. I could just never get the hang of 2D boards. It's why I have difficulty on lichess.

If you started off playing chess on a real board/have played most of your games on one before using 2D, I can understand why you’d prefer a 3D set. I learned how to play chess later in life and predominantly played online/through apps, so whenever I switch to a real board it doesn’t come as intuitively to me (depending on the angle I’m looking from, the height of the pieces can sometimes obstruct my view of possible pathways and tactics in a way that I’m not used to).

On the other hand, people I know who have been using real life chessboards most of their life have declined to play me virtually because they can’t “feel” the pieces moving as well through a 2D format, and it messes up their play. It just boils down to what you’re used to I guess, but I can imagine that playing both formats consistently should remedy any disparity between the two.
