Why Aren't Titled Players More Active In The Forums?

I realize there are many more non-titled players than titled players, but I'm curious as to why I don't see more titled players active in the forum threads.

Sometimes a titled player will post a helpful analysis (or something), but how many times do we see titled players create forum threads of their own (especially which aren't advertising)?

Is it because titled players are busy working on their own chess and don't have the time for the forums? Is it because they would rather participate in the forums under another account for anonymity? Or is there perhaps another reason I'm not thinking of?

Similarly, what is the highest rated titled player anyone has seen in the forums? A long time ago, I stumbled across a post from former Chess World Champion, Vladimir Kramnik, but I didn't post in the forum thread because I don't speak Russian.

In the forum threads, I'll sometimes see IM @poucin, IM @pfren, or even more rarely NM @Dale or CM @JamesColeman

I don't know where all the titled players are hanging out, but shoutout to all of the titled players (and high rated non-titled players) who help everyone in the forum threads with their expertise and valuable insights happy.png

Maybe because there's more non-titled players than titled players on chess.com.

justbefair

They often post threads about offering lessons.

Kramnik made a bunch of posts several weeks ago.

I've never thought of it! Interesting...

Great observation! I had given a thought about this too! But, my understanding is that forums is the place mostly for amateur chess fans to discuss the chess things. I don't see too many reasons for titled players to use this as they are professionals and won't have that much time to spend on forums! And again, I see only one major reason they could use the forums! It's for the analysis of games! But, again they might not do it here as they would be running some coaching classes as well! So, analysis is not for free! Apart from these things, I really don't see any reason for a titled player to be active in the forums! This is a place to chill out for us! Personally, I consider this place to be a social site of chess!

I agree. Good reason.

Personally I'm more interested in how expertly you used exclamation marks instead of full stops. Very impressive stuff my friend

Maybe because the forum is a zoo.

DrSpudnik

There is no incentive to do so. Even if they did engage, though, they would likely be inundated with tons of nonsense questions from thousands of people who can barely understand anything about the game and who would likely either not get the info given OR would start arguing about it. If you can find any of pfren's offerings over the years, you can see what I mean.

Honestly this makes the most sense. There are millions of non-titled players on chess.com, and compared to the number of titled players, I'd estimate there is at least a one in a thousand or more ratio

you familiar with Plato's critique of democracy ? thats exactly why. Some of us foolishly like giving back so we sort of stick around
you ever been shamed because you "only" in the top 1 percent of players? i have, its amusing predicament to be in here. and its not from the top percentile either. Titled players are almost always polite and if they strongly disagree, provide lines concretely showing why. Your average commenter is rude and ungrateful
pfren is the greatest tragedy though. He provided SO many people with superb analysis that people would otherwise need to pay a pro to attain but because scrubs didnt like his bedside manner hounded him in every direction.
TLDR version: normies lack respect for master level players.

I agree with @darkunorthodox88. I volunteer on another site's forums and it's a mess there, so I can relate to the users being ungrateful and entitled. There are people who put in time and effort to provide quality content for free and are rewarded with behavior that doesn't even have a modicum of respect. You'd think people would be appreciative of that, but nope.

Why did he close?

Pfren was a meanie

Swiftiequeen

prob cuz summmer or they think it a kid who dont know nothing

one thing i miss about old chess was this mystique around masters. nowadays, where IM's like Gotham to world class players like Naka beccome glorified chess jesters online for views, a big part of this imaginary boundary is lost.

i attribute part of the reason for the decrease in respect to that. Once upon a time a chess mmaster was seen as a professional. Somewhere between an olympian and a physicist. Now thanks to chess streamers we appear closer to gamers and w.e one thinks of gamers its a downgrade to the image

LorddVandheer

Pfren was no-nonsense. He is surely missed

Not a master level player here, but you’re absolutely right. I hope that us upper intermediates and above treat you with the respect you deserve, but I’m certain that’s not the case.

Perhaps part of the problem is that new players don’t understand quite how good masters are - a 400 will struggle just as much to beat an 1800 as they would a 2400 it makes no difference. I guess an analogy would be something like hurdles:

the 2400 is a pro, and smashes the 1800 who’s like a county-level athlete. The 400, though, keeps tripping over the hurdles so can’t tell the difference between both of the superior players…

MaetsNori

I imagine most titled players are too busy playing, training, or coaching to have time to visit the forums.

Working on chess tends to suck all the hours out of the day.

It's also not the most productive for them to comment on the forums, anyway. They often get idol worshipped or argued with - neither of which are likely appealing ...

It's nice when the rare few do stop by, though. Like celebrities, dropping in to say hi to us common folk. tongue.png
