why do people cheat?

I’m a stupidly keen, not very good, chess player. (Current rating in the 900’s so you get the idea.) I just love the game and find it a wonderful hobby. I sort of assume that the people I play on here, of a similar level, have a similar attitude. That’s why I’m always amazed at how many ratings points I get back as people have been determined to have cheated against me.

My question is, why are people at my lowly level bothering to cheat against me, some random guy with a relatively lowly ranking,on chess.com? Whats in it for them?

I’d love your thoughts or even better if you are someone who’s ever been tempted to cheat could you explain what your thinking was??
