Why is it SO HARD to type a simple GG after a good game?

Man!  I am so amazed that no one is ever compelled to say Good Game after a long hard match!  I do it all the time and almost NEVER get a response.  Are people really that clueless about common sportsmanship.......?  Jeeze!

Some just don't like to respond, or some don't even notice, DEAL WITH IT

not everybody is nice...

yes I agree. I always say gg. It's just politeness. But then I guess other people feel differently for whatever reason. I just assume they meant to say it but forgot!

look, people ban chat for a reason ok

forensiclifecoach

yes I'm sure that's true. But I have had quite a few friendly exchanges in chat

It’s too tiring to move mouse to cursor and type gg. I assume everyone who says nothing says gg.

EamonB1

yeah, they prob say it in their heads or smth

For me it depends, normally against people 200 points harder and I lost, I say it if I felt it was really close. Really depends on my mood and how work is, most of the time, the person leaves the game already or chat is disabled before I can type it.

Thanks to all who posted so quickly!  So what I am hearing is that it is too tiring and time consuming to type 2 letters after a game.  I will continue to do so as it is the only way I have made any friends on this site.  Plus I think a well played game....win or lose deserves a simple congratulations.  Gotta love that DEAL WITH IT post.  Obviously not a GG'er!

Deranged

Sometimes it comes across as condescending. Like when you're playing a blitz game and your opponent blunders a rook and resigns, then you type "GG" in chat and refuse a rematch. It feels like you're just rubbing it in.

Basically, yeah. Many players here aren't into social niceties. The community can be extremely toxic, which means there's less and less incentive to be courteous. Some of the comments to this post of yours show it glaringly.

I've actually never seen someone be toxic in the chat, in fact, I've even made friends through talking in chat. I have heard that some people are rude and abusive, but isn't the number quite low?

As for saying good game, I do it most of the time, 8 out of 10 times my opponent does not respond.

Hi Gupta!  Ya I would say about 2 out of 20 respond in my experience.  To me it's kind of like a social experiment.  I've only ever had a few people tell me I suck or be toxic.....(which I do in the grand scheme of chess!  LOL)

Usually it’s not worth it to say gg in a bullet game, but if I’ve invested in a longer time control game like 10min or longer and my opponent gives a nice game, I’ll say gg.

I just joined recently, and at first I always typed "thanks for the game!" after each match, but it's pretty rare for anyone to respond. Most people leave before I can even type it.

Personally I don't like to say "gg" because I think it comes across as kind of lazy or insincere. Like after a long chat message if someone just replies with "kk".

But even saying "thanks for the game!", I think it can come across insincere if I won (like Deranged says it feels like you're rubbing it in).

I think I might start simply saying "Thank you".

Osfan37

Make sure you type it after the game is officially over otherwise it comes off prickish

Aida_Amin

I only say "gg" if I lose, as it occurs to me that it might come across as rude if I do it when I win, especially if my opponent is upset over his/her loss.
