In order to practice, at least that's the reason for me.
Why people refuse to resign?
Hahaha, because so many sore losers never will accept their stupidity. Next time you play them theyll be using stockfish, because they are sooo gooood.... mmmm

what is the most amount of material that you have ever led by and still ended up losing?
13-14 I think

No no no. They don’t resign because maybe they want to practice an endgame.
If an opponent is short on time, be it a correspondence or an OTB game, I could see "hanging on" in hopes of a "flag fall" in a face to face match or the opponent literally dying in a postal match (the "dead man's defense").
(1) one queen
(2) one rook
(3) two bishops on opposite-colored squares
(4) a bishop and a knight
Which endgames do you know how to checkmate in? Me personally, only 1 and 2. The reason why people don't know how to checkmate in endgames (I've met a 1700 who didn't know how to checkmate with a bishop and a knight) is because of resignations.
if you dont want to checkmate then you must be the one resigning easy as that... dont waste your time... just resing. -.- easy.
When I get a stalemate in a hopelessly lost position it makes me so happy It feels better than a win.

Amen
Hah. I'm one of those "douchebags" that would play you in a losing position because the probability of losing a game after hitting resign is 100%
exactly. if you resign the game, you lose voluntarily. if you keep playing, there's a chance to get a draw or even win.
Blergh. I want to play OTB someday but all the weird etiquette around resigning has me feeling a bit intimidated.
People who refuse to resign even knowing that the position is lost wish to improve their chess game (either that or they get obscure pleasure from masochism???) Of course in order to improve at anything you have to learn from your practice or you will stay the same........

Don't worry. OTB tournaments have longer time controls, so if you look over your position and feel you are certainly lost, and your opponent has shown you that they are capable of cashing in on it, just turn over your king, reach out to shake their hand and say "congratulations".
The only time people might get annoyed would be if you are taking a lot of time to drag out a simple mate, especially if it was a long game and the next round is scheduled to start soon.

Only downside to never resigning is you end up with lots of games that look like this

Also lots of morons who wait a minute or more until they have 1 second on the clock to deliver mate.
aww that game is cute tbh
