Why people refuse to resign?

I do it out of respect, like if they have a basic checkmate and the game is nearing the end then I'll let them have it, but if they are up a bunch of material and it's gonna take a while for me to get checkmated then ill resign.

“Hoping for a couple of blunders, running out of time, or a blunderdraw.” .
It is 100% acceptable to continue playing in those cases. You can’t demand that somebidy gives up, when you decide the game is over.

The real problem is people refusing to play in a lost position, who just wait for their time to run out. It happens a lit to me and I report each and everyone of them.

Captain Obvious says its legal to continue playing a lost position, many people have trouble actually converting a won position, and once people think they have won they are much more likely to blunder.

I didn't resign in a game yesterday bc my opponent was low rated. He called me names in the chat bc I didn't resign!

He stalemated grin.png

I think the people who refused to resign actually either lower-rated players (I rarely see anyone resign who are low elo), actually wan to get checkmated, or just fighting back and hopefully win. I only resign if I know I ain't gonna win, but sometimes dosn't resign if I'm in a good mood.

people don't resign because there is a chance of stalemate.

It's also I think some kind of honor code for fighting on maybe some people think.

I had a king and pawn vs a king and 2 queens and drew.

Avatar of ManchesterCityFC1543

It might seem crazy but I promoted the pawn, made it a queen. Then my opponent fumbled a queen for free and I took out the other queen and the other king took out my queen.

The judge declared it a draw because it was the last game and it was time for the prize ceremony.

It's not as if I am better than you guys at all. I'm just stating this is a example of why people don't resign even in the most desperate of situations.

I've had several people get irritated with me recently, insisting that I resign. I don't really get why some people get so cross when their opponent doesn't resign. I've scraped a few stalemates by just hanging in there, and also the other way around, I've made an error in the last stages and allowed my opponent to get the stalemate. It's all part of the game, no. Today my opponent got kind of angry at how much time I was wasting. But I was making moves in reasonable time, I wasnt stalling, I was trying to move my king to cause problems for my opponent in the hope he would make a mistake. He didn't, fair enough, he played well. But I don't understand his hostility, telling me "you're wasting my time" I'm like - you have 2 x rooks and a queen - how much time do you need to find the mate? Also, sometimes I find it satisfying to actually achieve the mate, it's a bit disappointing when the flag goes up before the killing move. Anyway, whatever your preference, to resign or not resign - I think people should feel free to play it out if they want to.

Nb: I want to distinguish between 'not resigning' and 'stalling'

Taking 5 minutes to move the king when you only have 1 legal move is stupid, I get that. But I think resignation is a choice, not an obligation.

It's irritating when they try to get under your sking by rude comments.

So what your saying is that its disrespectful to not let you win and rather take advantage of a potential blunder? Bro what is that logic. What even is the point of chess if you auto-resign or throw the game when your losing. If you click the resign button its 100% chance of losing. If you keep playing at a disadvantage its smth like 60-90% chance of losing, depending on the material advantage or king safety. It's not disrespectful to hope for a blunder, and at those levels a difference in material doesn't even matter unless unless its like 2 queens vs a rook, and even then the winning side may still make a blunder. its not remotely disrespectful, and if you think it is, then you are also being super disrespectful by your own logic since you took advantage of your opponent's mistakes early game to get a winning position.

Cordialement

if my opponent is rated below 2000 then i won't resign bc there's about a 10% chance they stalemate xD

I find this also quite annoying, but frankly what can you do.
