Why some new member start with 800, 1200 or 1800 in rating?

Yes, it was a great mystery for me too! Thanks for solving it. I think that  chess.com staff could help little bit earlier, before we tangled up in questions. 😊

Not every post gets seen by staff or moderators. Especially outside of Help & Support and even there most questions are answered by other members.

I wish i had selected "beginner" when i created my account, cuz my highest blitz rating was the one i had before playing any actual game..

uhh.. there's a problem. Anyone can say that they are advanced

Perhaps ....but if they are beginners then their " advanced " rating will soon drop when they play intermediate players or even good beginners.

Yes, they can. The way the Glicko rating system works will quickly get a more accurate rating once games are played. If they were a bit optimistic, their rating will drop.

I started with 1200 in rating in evrything and other people start with 1800 or 800 or 1000. why is it diferent?

is just a website's strategy they think it might benefit strong players to avoid playing weak players at their first matches so 1200 sometimes or even 1800 is more leveled up and so they could jump right at their skill level faster avoiding playing beginners and thus being befinital for all levels of players...so i think

hi

Thank you Martin for an explanation . I was suprised that someone who just started, had a rating above 1800. I understand it now. It is my fault. I didn’t know how to find a good information. I am just a “digibeet”, as we speak! ☺️

I wish I had known this before getting registered.

When you register a new account on chess.com it asks you whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player and gives you a starting rank based on what you state:

beginner-800

intermediate-1200

advanced-1800

But I started with 542 as shown in my stats curve. Is that a new feature? something like dynamic ratings.      It's really a long up

Standev

They could request new users to do some puzzles to determine their starting rank, if they don't want to do the puzzles, just set it to the default starting rank.

this is reasonable

PikaBoy9995

This doesn't make any sense at all because I started with 400 elo ._.

Ilampozhil25

ok everyone here is being very very stupid

first off, who spread the myth about 1800

LITERALLY NO ONE EVER STARTED AT 1800

its 400-new at chess

800- beginner

1200- intermediate

1600- advanced

2000-expert

before, it was everyone started at 1200 (from what i read)

thats it

no eIgHtEeN hUnDrEd nonsense

and #30 is because you started at 400 and then you played a game the very same day and gained 142

the stats only show the ratings after the end of a full day

everything i said here should be painfully obvious but apparently some people cant figure 7 x 8

CoreyDevinPerich
You get to tell them how good you are at chess when you set up your account. Better players get higher ratings.

Or maybe this thread is 8 years old and this site was different then. This site literally did have accounts start at 1800s back then, which is why some people have 1800 daily ratings without playing a single game.

Martin_Stahl

At one point I believe 2000 was the top rating for new accounts. It's changed a few times since then.

You can pick between, new to chess, beginner, intermediate, and expert
