100 Endgames You Must Know Vs. Van Perlo's Endgame Tactics

Which of these books should I buy? Both are currently on sale in the Chessable format. I have a modest knowledge of basic endgame positions.

Before buying any particular book, I suggest going to the publisher site to see if it is possible to view a sample.

They are very different. Both are great. 100 Endgames is for learning, Van Perlo rather for enjoyment.

Thanks for the responses.

I really like the Van Perlo book, it’s great fun, and very readable. One of my favourites. I’ve never seen the other one.

One thing though, if you go for the Van Perlo book, try to make sure it’s the later (green) edition. The first edition in yellow contains a LOT of mistakes, some quite basic.

I've used both books, I think both are good in terms of material. (Haven't actually finished either, btw, my chess sin) The Van Perlo book is quite thick, a LOT of pages.

Considering the original poster's rating, I would recommend Silman's complete endgame course. I love the way it's organized, into sections based on what you should know at each rating level.

You are so right. I read the Silman endgame book up to 2200. But I worked (too fast) from 1800-2200. I am currently working on the 100 endgames on Chessable as the threadstarter is concidering. I wouldn`t had much clue about the 100 endgames if I hadn`t done the Silman stuff first. I guess the 100 endgames will be too hard for me.

Silman is claiming that the by far biggest chapter in his endgame book 1400-1600 ratinglevel is the most important chapter in any book you will ever read. But the guy who wrote 100 engames is writing and showing some stuff which takes 20 minutes of reading and a 25 quiz test on basic stuff since he think you already know quite much when you buy a book like that.

I found that out the hard way. I just started reading the first edition, and the third diagram of the first chapter in the book shows this position:

According to the book, White to move and win. In the game White played 1.Kd7, which lead to a draw. I wanted to see if I could win it and played out the position against Stockfish 14, without looking at the solution first. I spent about 30 minutes trying to win before I gave up and checked Stockfish's evaluation. It's a draw no matter what White does!

The green edition of van Perlo’s book corrects this example. It’s a draw, though somewhat tricky to defend.
