50 move rule

Hi all, I just lost 11 points off my rating because my king got checkmated against a king with rook after 56 moves.  I explained on the chat to my opponent "rialveno" from Italy, and requested a draw, but got no reply.

Pretty sure those aren't 50 moves Laughing

Oh, and I noticed there was a threefold repetition on move 86, but you missed it.

Why would yoour opponent take a ddraw, he has a win?

You didnt play 50 moves

linharvey222

(To hermit7): The 50 move rule implies 50 moves for each person, not the total number of moves for both people.

In addition to what the others have said, you must also claim draws by the 50-move rule (as well as draws by repetition).  The server won't do it for you.  This is also the way it works in OTB tournament play.

Hi omnipaul, I explained to rialveno that the game should be legally drawn after the required moves, and requested a draw.  I do not know how to claim one though, could you tell me how?

Press the draw offer button

hermit7

Hi linharvey222, since as long as I can remember, it is 25 moves each.

hermit7

Hi Diakonia, that is what I did to request the draw, but never got a reply, or draw offer declined message!

If you press the draw button, that is the same as verbally offering someone a draw.  If they make a move that is the same as saying no to the draw offer.  So if you pressed the draw button and your opponet makes a move, he is saying no to the offer, and the game continues.

It's 50 moves each without a capture or pawn move. Has been for a long time.

That information is incorrect.  It is 50 moves made by each player (so, in the game, the earliest you could claim a draw by the 50-move rule is at move 112).  As noted by VyboR, you could have claimed a draw by threefold repetition if you hit the draw button after 86. Kd3 but before 86. ... Kd1 (and only at that exact time).

Thanks for your replies guys, I knew about the threefold repetition rule, but did not think about it because of being convinced of the mate not being possible after so many moves!  Anyway, I've been playing recreationaly for 45 years, but only picked up my first book on chess about a month ago and was amazed with what you can do with a little bit of tactical know how, so now I'm going to join a chess club cos I love this "game".

And to think I've been playing 25 moves all those years..........

Couldn't believe my luck alex! wanna game?

All true what you wrote. Chess.com should have an optional feature that let's the computer claim a draw if the position repeats 3 times or if there are 50 moves without a piece being captured.

I think, if at any point during the game, either player has offered a draw, a draw will be automatically declared if a 3 fold rep occurs or has occured.

Nope.  You have to press the draw button to claim a 3 fold rep.

hpmobil

There are games where one or both didn't want a draw after a threefold repetiton. So an automatic draw would not be correct as each player has to check. this by himself.

Oi!  Get orf my land!

Have a look at my endgame v arcwal, you will laugh your head off.  The game finished automaticaly without anyone claiming the draw.  I was waiting for arcwal to make the 3rd reply, but the game stopped beforehand.  "Game drawn  because of repetition" was the result.  First result I've had for trespasing!
