Can you avoid defeat with just the king and rook?

Arisktotle

Generally not but there are exceptions with the minority king on the sides.

Here is an example: white to play and win

Here is an example: white to play, black draws:

That’s excellent. Do you think white can force black into that losing position for black with best play by black

Why is the question in the opening post the exact opposite of the question in the title? Quite weird.

aflfooty

It’s the same question asked in reverse. It depends on whether you want the answer you want if you are playing black or white. If you are white you are in the title question hoping you can win if you play “ perfect play”. If you are black you are asking can you force the draw with “ perfect play”. My question is more can white FORCE the win as he has more material to do it…..or can black avoid the position(S) shown as a win above under the 50 move rule

magipi

Okay, so the answer is what Arisktotle gave in #2. It is a super easy draw in 99% of positions, with very very few exceptions.

Incidentally, I tried googling it, and I found the answer in 10 seconds. And it would have been 5 seconds for someone who don't mistype.

Thanks😊😊

Hello chess is so fun !!!💩💩

In the second board above, if it's black to play, black would win white's rook with Rb4 check, but according to the Syzygy database it's still a draw with perfect play.  Rook vs knight endgame is a draw in most positions.
