That is because bishops are clumsy when it comes to mating without atleast a knight and rook for back up. With a rook and bishop ending the king will of course play a powerful part. I would say reasearch and find some books to study up on. Study end games because it is easy to get to the end game were mating patterns then shine. I would also vote on learning combinations and how to use them accordingly. And have some restraint when playing the middle game and be sure not to attack to early just be patient the combinations will stare you in the face :D hope this helped!
Checkmate with various pieces

Lol are you freaking kidding? Knight+Bishop is a notoriously difficult mate, that some masters even struggle with it or don't know it.
sorry- as you can see, I just joined chess.com, and I'm pretty new to studying chess in general. So the notoriety is something that I'm unfamiliar with. Thanks for your helpful input though!

Hello,
for the basic Rook vs lone King pattern, please have a look at the in-depth explanations given in my latest blog post:
http://chesstrainerapp.blogspot.fr/2013/12/how-to-checkmatewith-king-and-rook.html
Does anybody have a link to an article or video outlinging the basic checkmate patterns for different pieces?
I'm not looking for an advanced in depth "Two rooks vs. Knight and Queen" kind of article- I'm thinking isolated opponent king, and how to corner and checkmate him with various piece combinations.
Queen endings are obviously a no-brainer, but I feel like in most endgames involing a bishop and a knight, or Rook and bishop, I spend an unnecessary time chasing the king around the board.
Thanks in advance!
