Help in Endgame technique.

@roi_g11 Stockfish thinks that White has a definite advantage (about half a pawn) after 1. Na4 in the original position. 1...Rc8 is answered by 2. Rg1.

Hello.

I am an improving beginner of 1750+- elo strength. I was wondering, what is the best method to improve your endgame play? I am a fairly good at tactics for my level, and I don't have any problems in sharp games which are decided by direct  tactical fights in the middlegame or even in the opening. I also tend to reach a lot of endgames with huge advantages. But somehow a large majority of these games I cannot convert...it's really frustrating. I have studied "Silman's Complete Endgame Course", and have a fairly good grasp of the basics, such as opposition, activity, basic KP, minor piece and Rook  endings etc. Strangely, I try to solve a lot of puzzles and endgame studies, and I don't have have this problem there. OTB however...I always seem to get paralyzed by my opponent's counterplay, my pieces get passive, and...

Oh and not to mention the "equal" endgames I sometimes get out of Ruys or Caro-Kanns. It has come to a point where I simply start playing for draw out of panic. I should mention that I always play against slightly stronger opponents (elo 1800-2150+-).

So what should I do? I already spend atleast 3+ hours in OTB/sparring against Shredder. I don't play Blitz. So solve more problems? Analyzing my mistakes? I try to do it...when I'm not feeling absolutely disgusted with myself.

After playing over your games, you are not a 1750+ elo player.  Sorry...

@roi_g11  White's plan is to capture the Black queenside and queen the c pawn. This is no less strong than Black's plan; the outcome depends on tactical finesses.

I certainly don't disagree with your assertion that R+N vs R+N endgames are extremely tactical. It's precisely this that makes engines so strong in such positions.

You criticized neoindian for evaluating the original position as equal, and you said that White would have to go passive to stop Black's plan.

If it were Black's move that would be a reasonable assessment, but it's White's move, and that makes a big difference in this sharp position; White has the initiative.

I don't understand. I created this account about a week ago, started 2 correspondence games, and then had to abandon the games because I was and still am having technical issues with this site. My rating is not based on online correspondence or blitz chess, and definitely not these two games. All this has been discussed in this thread before.

when your rating is 1750 then you are surely not a beginner ( beginner= under 1300). Anyway I dont believe that your Otb ratingis 1750 just because of your low chess.com ratings and the game you posted here. Nobody at 1600 strength would play like this. I would guess your rating might be around 1500.( never 1700 )

So my first evaluation of dead equal may not have been too far off. Hopefully I have explained my thought process.  I saw this entire line starting with Nd6, because of the pinned e7 pawn. Then of course, I completely missed that with my king on e3 I'm blundering everything.

This is why a lot of my endgames go wrong. Misevaluations, definitely. Here it was me getting too optimistic. But also a lot of these sudden...blackouts, if you will.

I'll try to post a few other examples.

@neoindian

I use Chess Tempo (www.chesstempo.com) for endgame problems. They are taken from real games and usually only have 3-5 pieces, but can be quite difficult. Check it out!
