I am new. I always have decent first moves ( that's what i think ), i try to build a good defense, but no matter how hard i try, i always end up getting outsmarted =D. I'll keep up training and learning. grin

Whenever your opponent makes a move ask yourself what they are trying to do. If what they’re doing is not clear then now ask yourself. ‘What checks, captures, and attacks do I have?’ This way you’ll make better moves.

Select a simple opening which you feel would suit your play and practice with it , learn and understand opening principles and theory so you can apply it in your games according to the moves that your opponent makes. Understanding the principles might help you get an idea why your opponent chose to make that move and help you respond to it better. It is not always just about creating a good defense but positioning your pieces efficiently without putting them in danger so they can defend and attack as well . Also while building up your defences , beware of the gaps that might occur in some places that the opponent could exploit
