How to get better at rook vs rook with many pawns endings? and is this chessable course worth it?

Hello everyone,

There are plenty of videos on lucena, phillodor etc, but not much videos on single rook vs rook with many pawns end games. These are difficult even with a pawn up, and is the most common end game position but no videos to help with that. I was looking at this chessable course, can anyone be kind enough to tell me if it will address this problem and is worth buying, if not can you recommend any videos or courses on this (even if it is paid it is ok provided it serves my problem). Thanks

Example this position with white to move with a pawn up, I can't win against computer easily. Obviously rook trade will help but a good player is not going to do that. I don't know what principles to use here to convert this into a lucena or some winning position.

Being a pawn (or sometimes even two pawns) up is often not enough to win a rook endgame. The position in the diagram is probably just a draw, you'll never win it against an engine. Ever. As for playing against humans, you have to start from the basics. Not just Philidor and Lucena, but R+p vs R in general, it's much more that those two. Though they say that every R+p vs R postion comes down to either Philidor or Lucena with correct play, you need to know what this "correct play" is, how to punish incorrect play etc. If you're going for chessable, I'd start with "100 Endgames you must know", it has a great chapter on said topic. When you have a grasp on the basics, you'll know when what positions to work forward to. In R+p vs R shifting one piece even one square to the side is often the difference between a win and a draw.

Rooks behind pawns and active king are the general rules. But it's easier said than done. Also try to reduce weaknesses. In the position you posted white must defend b2, f2 and h2. I'd play Rd4 to cut the black king off and prevent it from creating a majority on the a/b files.
