Some people always play out losing positions. They may learn techniques they were unsure of. They may simply feel that a game should be played to completion. Their opponent may make a mistake trying for overkill and deliver a stalemate.
Quickly mating is the best option. Blocking the opponent is a personal prerogative. Playing for overkill and stalemating or resigning simply reinforces the third reason to play out a lost position.
True, but it becomes a bit of a shaky argument after a certain rating level has been achieved and when the material deficit is so big. For example, a 1600 will not learn any new techniques by being mated by Q+R.
Anyhow, it's here and it's probably going to stay with the rise of bullet and Nakamura's tactics/antics.
