King and Pawn Endgame Puzzles

A useful question to ask when starting on any study is "What if it were Black's move?" That might help with this study if you already know that the standard way to win with the queen against the d-pawn on the 7th rank (making the enemy king block the pawn) doesn't work if the queen can't go to c3.

I would like to see your study. I started a topic Looking forward to a nice study where you can post it.

Wow guys thanks for being so active. I checked this a time back and there was nothing, but now this is an awesome blog. I'll post more puzzles for you guys.

Aplopl3x

Oh yeah, I have another blog named Chess Puzzles. It is just all-around puzzles.

By the way, there is a bunch of analysis for this puzzle, but it is way too extensive to put in here.

Which puzzle are you talking about? 6.Qh4 is not possible in the first puzzle.

Sorry, I only just noticed this response. I think I must have been a bit p*ssed when I posted it - should have read 12.Qg5 (after which 12...Kf7 13.Kd7 Kf8 14.Ke6 Ke8 15.Qe7#). As it is it's almost impossible to reach "solved".

Nice but the checkmate is possible much faster with   12.Qg5 Kf7 13.Kd7 Kf8 14.Ke6 Ke8 15.Qe7#

ZeroBlankZero

on the third puzzle doesn't taking on f6 in the first move gives a slight advantage for white ?

If you find any good King and Pawn endgame puzzles, post them here. This is where you would put something like Reti's 1921 study.

(9...Kb4 might be more robust.)

This is faster:

There are lots of ways to win, which the site interface is poorly designed to handle, but I found the repetition 11...Kg3, 12...Kg4, 13...Kg3 particularly hard to find.

I think 4...Kc4 looks easier.

Somebody already pointed out mate in 7 after move 5. After 6...Kh8 what are you going to do next? Take your move back? After 6...Kf8 it's even quicker:

By the way mate with two queens should never take more than 4 moves - 2 after your move 12.

You mention Reti's 1921 study. His related 1928 study appears less well known.

White to play and draw

Kg6 go for the g7 pawn, and the king can consecutively chase the f pawn and try to protect the c pawn at the same time.  The most stubborn line is:

1.Kg6 Kb6

2.Kxg7 h5 (2. ...f5 3. Kf6 f4 4. Ke5 f3 5. Kd6 f2 6. c7 f1=Q 7. c8=Q and queen vs. queen and pawn is a theoretical draw)

3. Kf6 h4 4. Ke5 h3 5. Kd6 same draw
