Indeed, I looked at several alternatives, but they were all rejected.
For example,
1. Nf4 (taking away escape square h5) Kh7
2. Bf8 (now completely boxing in the king) Kh8
3. Nh5 Kh7
4. Kh8 Bg7+
5. Kh7 Nf6#
