Would anyone care to try their hand at a simple pawn endgame?  Wink

White is winning and it looks simple, but I assure you, if you play it out against a strong computer, you will be lucky to even score a draw.

I can't imagine an actual game having a position like that.

Believe it or not, somewhat similar positions have occured in real games... although a position can be interesting and instructive even if that's not the case.  The "Little Game of Chess" is hundreds of years old. Smile

If your subtle goal was to give me a headache ..... fait accompli.

It's all your fault. Whilst reading up on Evans, I learned he was the first to solve this endgame puzzle, after 100+ years of wrong answers. Wink

100+ years is a long time for one guy to be continually wrong. I bet he had even a bigger headache.

I like the look of this puzzle. I haven't got a clue about the answer but intuition says Kd2 first move for white then mirror black until his king moves
batgirl
I would guess Ke2, attacking and defending while centralizing, to be the first move.

That fails to 1.Kd2 h5 2.a4 h4 3.a5?? h3 4.a6 h2 5.a7 h1=Q 6.a8=Q+ Qxa8.

If I could move the .... Things  maybe I could figure it out...maybe.

Hmm.. either my computer (Fritz 8) is bad at endings (well, this is true, but how bad is a mystery), or I am better at endings than you guessed!

Perhaps both. Fritz 8 isn't the strongest engine, but you still have to pick some good moves to draw and some excellent moves to win.

Loomis
I played 1. c4 and followed it with 1. a4 using the fact that these pawns would protect each other from attack by the king. The same strategy does not work for black a tempo behind. Fritz didn't find a refutation to that idea, but maybe it couldn't find the most clever resistance.

Your'e on! ( There's another loss for my profile!:-()

the position is equal, White has the move. a4 seems the most logical 1st move: Qing 1st would win the game. White can always mirror any Black defense.

Pawns are VERY valuable in this game. NOBODY want's to do this.
