"Little Game of Chess"

Believe it or not, somewhat similar positions have occured in real games... although a position can be interesting and instructive even if that's not the case. The "Little Game of Chess" is hundreds of years old.

"Would anyone care to try their hand at a simple pawn endgame? "
If your subtle goal was to give me a headache ..... fait accompli.

It's all your fault. Whilst reading up on Evans, I learned he was the first to solve this endgame puzzle, after 100+ years of wrong answers.

That fails to 1.Kd2 h5 2.a4 h4 3.a5?? h3 4.a6 h2 5.a7 h1=Q 6.a8=Q+ Qxa8.

Hmm.. either my computer (Fritz 8) is bad at endings (well, this is true, but how bad is a mystery), or I am better at endings than you guessed!

Perhaps both. Fritz 8 isn't the strongest engine, but you still have to pick some good moves to draw and some excellent moves to win.

White is winning and it looks simple, but I assure you, if you play it out against a strong computer, you will be lucky to even score a draw.
Your'e on! ( There's another loss for my profile!:-()
