How do you visualize a Pawnbox..for example a Pawnbox for a black pawn on d3?

By pawnbox, I assume you mean when a pawn is trying to advance, and you want to see if your king can stop it. If so...

The concept of a pawnbox is where you draw a box in front of an advancing pawn, in order to quickly determine if your king can catch the pawn or not. First, draw a diagonal line in front of the pawn all the way to its end of the board. For the black pawn on d3, this would be from d3 to f1. Then, make each end point on that diagonal line the corner of a box. So for our d3 pawn, this box would have the lines d1 to d3, d3 to f3, f3 to f1, and f1 to d1. If your king can ever step into this box, and there is no pieces that can interfere with your king attacking the pawn, then you will always be able to stop the pawn. In this instance, the white king can stop black's d3 pawn with either the move Kf3, or Kf2. Either works. Meanwhile, the black king cannot step into the box of the white pawn on e6. Therefore, the pawn will be able to queen.

Hope this helps!
