31 is still a new record if legal! You can , do it! Btw, did you see my latest post in Endgame Studies?
Triple Checkmate
OK, here is one version with 31 double checkmating moves. I haven't given up on 32 yet, but it requires more research.
Example Pawn routes:
wPh2-h6xPg7-g8=N
bPh7-h1=Q
bPb7xPa6-a1=Q
bPa7-a1=Q
wPe2-e6xPf7-f8=B
wPf2-f8=N
bPe7-e1=Q
wPc2-c6xPd7-d8=N
wPd2-d8=N
bPc7-c1=N
wPb2-b6
Please stop these ridiculous posts! I`m almost 72 years old and I don`t have that much time left in my life and I don`t want to waste what few little quality days that I even have.
And we work so hard to turn this thread into something serious. How much closer can you get to an impossible triple check than by 31 double checks?
Here are 32 double checkmates! I also removed the last pawns since the position looks nicer with only pieces. I changed the matrix a bit in that I added a battery on f1/f2 which enabled some new checkmates. Pawn routes:
wPh2-h6xPg7-g8=R
wPg2-g8=R
bPh7-h1=Q
wPe2-e6xPf7-f8=B
wPf2-f8=B
bPe7-e1=Q
wPa2-a6xPb7=N
wPb2-b8=N
bPa7-a1=B
bPc7-c3xd2-d1=Q
bPd7-d1=R
wPc2-c8=N
Took a while to arrive at the idea. The real problem was to include it while not consuming an overdose of material. This required some redesign.
By the way, there is a completely different method by which the maximum can be raised to somewhere around 50! I'll let you know when I have a satisfactory result there.

I think I got something Arisktotle! 22 varations! I’m sure that your postion will be much more refined. This postion is just my first suscessful experiment.
Also, how about a record for without promoted pieces? I think that this 22 would be the curren holder of that domain.
You got the idea! I've been around 40 but it will take me some time to find efficient setups. I like to work with promoted pieces because it challenges my retro skills.
By the way, there is a flaw in your version. 1. .... Rf3+ 2. Rxf2# leads to selfmate in 1 but not double checkmate. The way I understood your conditions is that no single self-checkmates should be allowed! Easy to repair though.

Yay! And that’s fine my friend, whatever works for you. I suppose I can work in without promoted pieces, and you can work on with.
Also, I manged to crank out a 23 based on my 22, and it only has 14 pieces in total! I also managed to fix the flaw that you pointed out, or at least I think so.

Although not a triple checkmate this is kind of cool.
That’s a classic. See this link for a real game where it actually happened: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1242924
And that is true Togishere.

This one looks OK! What I like about it is that the black king starts with 2 flight squares and they both go in all checkmates. Very efficient!
Hmm, now don't see the legality either, since my scheme assumes 5 captures, one too many. It is certainly correct though when you leave one black knight out, gving 31 variations. I'll take a look tomorrow to see where I exactly miscounted! And then try to get to 32 anyway because it is a nice number! edit: I see; forgot the third black rook! As said, look again tomorrow.
