How important is it?

I probably average around 40%, what is a good level of accuracy to achieve? And how would people recommend improving this?

I'm in the 700 range and if I'm 65% or lower in accuracy I lose a lot. Playing a lot of games, studying chess videos, puzzles and analyzing your own games will help grow pretty rapidly.

Accurrary on its own doesn't tell you that much unfortunately. If you play the same every game your accuracy will be higher or lower depending on how well your opponent plays. If your opponent plays horrible moves with easy responses on your side you may have 90-95% accuracy and a game that is only 15 moves. On the flip side you could have a low percentage game because you missed a hanging bishop for multiple moves despite not blundering a single piece!

If you are looking at past game analysis I would focus on what sort of mistakes you are making and see if there is any pattern to them. Say you often forget about a long range bishop that you hang your knights or even queens with often. Start keeping track of it in the back of your mind of where they are attacking and you can prevent a certain mistake that might lose you games.
