Are free points a good thing?

Some of you may recall a topic I started last week about whether or not my opponent should have resigned rather than let the clock run down from 16:50 in a 30 minute rapid game.

It happened just now in my last game.  My opponent didn't make a move from 26:51 on his clock. I tried to message him but got no response. He then abandoned the game at around 3 mins.

In the 20 or so games that I've played, one opponent resigned after 9 moves, one after 3 and incredibly one after just 1 move. I guess something happened in the latter two that caused them to have to leave the game. Then there's been these two clock run downs.

I feel like I could end up at 800 points without actually playing much chess. I'm glad of the free points but also I do want to actually play, even if I end up losing.

Sorry to hear that.  Sometimes, this happens to me and I find it to be annoying.

I wouldn't worry about points.  The most important thing about playing chess is to have fun.  Ratings go up and down, like stocks in the stock market.  Ratings have low points and they also have high points too.

No that's fair enough.  I am having fun learning about the game and playing it.

I'm not keen on timewasters though.

It happens. Dont worry. The free points are a good thing. You will find yourself playing higher rated players which will be more challenging so help you improve.

Bingo!  Well put.

You may find this happens less often after more games. I also started an account not long ago and the system usually matches you up with opponents who just started an account. Some of those people don't care about loses or getting reported.

Once I left the chess.com app open and I accidently started a game when imy phone was in my pocket. I think I might have run down the clock after fumbling a move. All I saw was that I lost a game when I looked at my phone again

Report these users for stalling.

I will do so in the future.
