I just played vs a guy whose rating was 730 and mine was 705, after I won the game mine rose to 714 and his dropped to 700, I'm wondering how does the assignment of points work, it's a bit confusing

on chess.com, if someone hasn’t played a time control in a while, their rating is a bit more ‘volatile’, for lack of a better word. normally, you’d probably get 8 points, but since chess.com doesn’t know the players strength, they’ll take/give more points. so to answer your question, your opponent probably hadn’t played blitz or whatever time control you were playing in a while

Yeah. There is a stat called GlickoRD (I think). It represents how confident the system is that it can correctly estimate your rating. When its higher, such as if you haven't played for a while or are on a winning or losing streak (I think), it makes larger adjustments to your rating, when its lower such as when you are winning and losing in equal measure, it makes smaller adjustments. Players can have a different GlickoRD, so you'll see a bit of variation in the rating adjustment. Ratings are intended to be an average measure, over a number of games. New players also have a high GlickoRD which is why people have large swings over their first few games.
