auto resign

Not sure what happened.
I’m playing a 60min game. We are 22 moves into the game. We have between 45-47 mins left on the clock. The clock countdown starts for auto resign. I was not keeping that close a track on the clock but it seemed less than 4 min when the auto resign happened to my opponent.
What a shame. Can someone explain this to me. As a beginner I need more time, which I why I played a 60 min game.

Your opponent likely was disconnected.

From my understanding of the rules, after the 10th move, you have a lot of time to make a move. The auto resign started counting down after 3-4minutes.
Still confused after reading the rules that you posted.

I agree with @equinelady. She asked about auto resign. I’d that the same thing as abandonment? If It is, shouldn’t that explanation mention both terms? Or is This something else? Thank you!

Reread the rules again. I thought the auto resign timer had started because my opponent was taking too long to make a move. But instead you’re saying it started because he was no longer on the app. Is that correct?

So most likely the opponent disconnected. The other potential explanation is that the opponent just left the server by his own choice without resigning.

The game went beyond 10th move, so the opponent had all his remaining time to make a move. Only up to 10th move one can lose if they take more than a half of their total time per move.

In any case, this was lost due to abandonment, either because of disconnect or because the opponent chose to abandon the game without resigning.

Thank you martin_stahl and nkiristic. I understand now.

You're welcome.

#3, why would you play a disconnected player, if he or she wasn't auto resigned, you will just wait for 50-40 minute to end his or her clock

This section:

Disconnect timer

Another way a game can be ruled as abandoned is if you disconnect for too long. How long you can stay disconnected before the game ends is based on the time controls. The rule is, if you’re disconnected, you have 10% of the base time plus 40 x increment, with a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 3 minutes to reconnect. If you can’t reconnect in this amount of time, the game will be ended.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this.
