I started with the Italian then slowly built my knowledge by watching YouTube videos. I think I learnt the king’s gambit followed by the English then the queen’s gambit and English system

English opening imo is very flexible. Suits all kind of players....whether you like sharp tactical lines or deep positional games.

My favorite openings as a beginner were the Petrov defense, the Sicilian defense, and the Italian game.

Sicilian? You were wrong, even i avoid sicilian with 2.b4 everytime.

I think also the Petroff Defense is interesting for beginners, because the positions are a little bit different from Italien or Scotch and can give Black a favourit position.

I like playing it from the get-go, but it is true that sometimes I can get into trouble. grin.png
The truth is however that white at beginner level plays the inferior Bowdler attack very often, which is not that scary for black. I have decent results from the start with Sicilian, but I do agree that playing e4-e5 is probably the safest bet for an improving player.
