1. Time sink, time vs progression is snails pace

2. Knights are the bane of existence lol

3. The most valuable piece is worthless

4. The Chess Books especially are so unreadable as a book it’s not funny. Why put pages and pages of writing. Needs to be ultra diagram filled move by move not skip ahead 10 moves. It’s a book the formatting on every chess book I’ve encountered is a head scratcher

5. Both notations are trying to make chess harder that what it is

My main gripe is it’s mostly an ego/complex on making things harder not easier on a new player.

It’s like learning a new language but instead of helpful material the material itself isn’t helpful as it isn’t what you would say formatted even average. It’s poor honestly

6. Games are meant to be enjoyable. Chess isn’t what I would say that in totality. I don’t bat an eye lid on people playing an “easier” game that’s a peeing contest comparing all games. What’s most important is the game itself.

Probably burned out playing games, but the spice initially is now just a mild herb on interest currently

Like say your learning from an engine. They give you the best moves but don’t tell you why it is so. It’s just the best move. Same with blunders... it’s just a blunder

have you studied for many years like me?

Its value appreciates towards the endgame. Yes, it can be an attacking piece.

Books are designed to allow as many people to understand chess as possible. No book can adequately meet the needs of every chess player; in this case, you and probably some others. It's something subjective.

If the book were to be modified, it might meet your personal needs, but it will deprive some others too. This applies to academic subjects like English and Science too.

A book is not meant to mirror an animated cartoon and become many pages long. Having positions after every single move will cause a book to become very thick and more expensive. In turn, fewer players might take up the book due to the extra cost and inconvenience to them. This is partly the reason why books only display crucial positions or positions of interest.

If you have a new suggestion for chess notations and it's well liked by many, you can come up with one. Who knows, it might even become popular.

Nice to hear another opinion

Dcasey91
All I’m saying with books it’s honestly on the basis of general reading material it’s not actually good per say.

Actually cartoonish pictures are more helpful imo instead of tiny diagrams/paragraphs of pages, it’s nonsensical.
It’s too much overloading.

I count thousands of pages that had ten plus notations and the assumption was made the reader would understand and follow along the position, newsflash unless your very very good visually it’s awfully non appealing to a reader.

Maybe now that everything is a grind many things in Chess for me just rubs me the wrong way
porkqupine

You're supposed to follow the games with your own board. Seems kinda obvious, no? How do you think everybody else reads those books?

Dcasey91
Yes with your own board but not full pages of notations ah well
MisterWindUpBird

I agree with the points about notation and such. It creates an opaque 'gatekeepy' culture rather than a community. It's so easy to make sentences. It's on purpose.

MisterWindUpBird

I know that is coming off like @Coolout too... I dunno. Five minutes is a real chess game!!!! I like fluro' stuff! You old!

technical_knockout

usually just skim through the moves.

sometimes i'll follow along, but mostly hunting for positional gems to glean from my chess books:

...opening a second front;

...consolidating material;

...removing the defender;

these strategic axioms add up & can help guide your plans in a similar fashion to how patterns draw you towards the possibility of tactical opportunities.

How would you suggest books go over games? With 120 diagrams for a 60 move game? Or a more reasonable 6-10 skipping over less important moves with notation that is quick to learn? For a complete beginner, yes, chess books are extremely difficult to consume. But they're not meant for complete beginners. There's youtube videos and videos on chess.com and articles that completely new players can use.

As for analyzing games with engines, yes, it's not all too helpful. For all ratings, there will be moves and evaluations humans just can't comprehend. Chess.com's analysis is a bit better than just the raw engine, but it can still be difficult to understand.

You're completely right that games are supposed to be enjoyable. If you don't find chess enjoyable, I suggest you stop playing. If you decide to come back, I bet you'll be even better than before (I don't know why, but it works. Maybe it's just because we usually quit when we're worse than normal)
