Co-learnig a Black and White system at the same time.

Up until this time I mostly played Daily Games and used the move explorer (which is legal) for my openings. This is actually a bad approach, since you play openings rather well but don't learn anything. I mostly stuck with London System for white, and Caro Kann for black.

I've recently decided to be better at chess and am making my studies serious.

So I'm currently learning Rob Ramirez's Counterblow system (KID and Pirc) for black. I like that it is a system and I like his style.  I'm about halfway through the course.

But I'm wondering, should I be co-learning a white system at the same time?  Or should I finish up my Black studies first.

My goal is OTB USCF tournaments, at my current pace I'm doing less than one a month, but I can see upping the rate slightly.

Thanks!

Your opening choice should be based on the kinds of middle games you like to play.

Given my Daily rating here of under 1,000, my Rapid rating of under 700 and my USCF Rapid under 500, I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer that question! :- )

But, that's a great insight for future-me!

I'm concern right now about learning Black, then White system, or learning Black and White systems at the same time.

Not the painter. Ask yourself: "Are my games being decided by the openings or missed tactics, blunders and mistakes?"

Look at your last 3 losses. The opening had nothing to do with deciding the game. But study what makes the game fun for you.

Oh no, you looked at my recents, they really were bad, I wasn't concentrating.

So yes, Tactics! I'm studying that also. I'm taking Chua's Calculations class and also applying that to puzzles. (This is on Chessable, not here.)

OK I looked at all of your losses in your daily games. Same story. The opening had nothing to do with deciding the games. But I did notice that you do what most people at your rating do. You have memorized moves but dont understand why you're making them. Whatever you decide good luck and have fun. But openings are not going to solve what you're doing wrong.

I actually agree with you 100%

Hi!

In my opinion it would also be good to refresh your London System as White before the tournament. As White you might also consider playing in some games a Reversed Opening like King's Indian Attack or King's Fianchetto that lead to similar positions to your KID/Pirc setups, but with an extra tempo, which might help you level the game or even imbalance it in your side.

Good luck!
