Is it possible to play mostly defensive only and somehow get ahead in a game ?

I feel like winning is extremely difficult if you don't really have an offensive plan in mind and just want to make the game complicated for your opponent.

I was wondering if anyone here had an easier time playing slow positional games.

Simple answer is no. Playing without an offensive plan is an bad idea. On the other hand, that doesnt mean that you have to attack the king early on and go for checkmate. But you have to try to do something positive for your position with every move(win space, improve pieces etc.). If you do that, you have an 'aggressive' game plan (active is probably the better word).

The player who is attacking isn't necessarily the player who has the advantage. If you can tempt your opponent into making an unsound attack and then defend accurately to refute it, you will be left in a winning position.

I was Black in this game, and while my opponent did get a very strong attack, he was never in a superior position.

The tricky part is that defending accurately under heavy pressure is harder than attacking.
