Early blunders

I'm a very poor beginner studying to improve and I find some engine analysis confusing.

For example I played qh5 in this position and I can't figure out why it is a bad move. Aside from the general advice to avoid playing queen early.

Can anyone advise? I'm sure it'll end up being obvious nervous.png.

Blacks king is in check, there are two available responses, pawn g6 and Kd7. Kd7 is awful as white continues his king hunt with Qxf5 with a check, so what happens if black plays g6? Now your queen and knight are under attacks by pawns simultaneously, and you’re forced to lose the knight in order to save the queen. Black is then immediately better.

Whenever your position has a threatened piece like above, before moving ask yourself- “can I safely ignore that attack or do I have to address it?” While Qh5+ is a forcing move, I.e black must respond to that, it also has an easy refuting reply with g6. So when considering Qh5, did you ask “how could my opponent reply here?” ?

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the advice. Thinking too short term. Black didn't play g6 so I was off the hook in this game. At higher level play I would definitely be punished!

That’s the fun with chess, just because you make a mistake doesn’t mean your opponent will notice!

This might be of interest to you as well.
