Early Queen attacks and other problems

Hello everyone.

Good day!

I am in need of some help. I am sure I'm not the first one to have this problem. However, I have noticed that I am very bad defending against early queen attacks. Does anyone know how I can practice recognising queen attacks and defending against them?

As well, I noticed generally speaking that if a person has a very aggressive opening I often lose quickly.  Does anyone know how I can get better at this?

Thanks for your help chess community happy.png

often early queen attacks you need to find their threat and then stop it, after that you can develop normally and your opponent will usually have to waste moves keeping the queen safe while you gain an edge in development.

this is a very basic analysis of what might happen when you deal with an early queen attack, i did not check the computer so i mightve missed some tactics, but what i want you to focus on is how black just deals with the one move threats, develops, and then use this lead in development to play actively.

EDIT: As someone pointed out to me, there is a much better response to 5.Qb3, rather than 5...Qe7 there is 5...Nd4. I considered this move but didn't realize the potential with ...b5 ideas.

thank you those are solid ideas - now I just have to memorise it so I can fight early queen attacks like the scholars mate happy.png

you dont need to memorize, it would be far more effective to understand the idea.

Agree. The basic idea is the mindset turnaround: the early queen is not a threat, it’s a mistake of your opponent. Take advantage of that mistake.

And I want to add something really important. You play rapid games and that is good. But you blitz out your opening, 12 moves in 3 minutes. Don’t do that. Take your time. If you face an early queen, don’t hesitate to spend 5 minutes to check all your attacked pieces, all checks and all opportunities to punish that early queen. If you need more then 5 minutes, spend more.

Hey - good points ! especially the point about slowing myself down and trying to figure out how to counter threats happy.png Thank you.

It's easy to get rattled by these especially if, like me, you are mostly a Daily player and in comes a Bullet or Blitzer, often much higher rated in those games, with early queen attack and fireworks. But like Chess_Player_lol says, if I stick to principles and don't try crazy, nervous counter attack, I can play through to middle game and then sometimes I find such players have a weak end game. It's not instant doom if they take a rook early etc .

Also punishing some kind of opening inaccuracy like this is usually not something immediate, usually the advantage will just be your opponent being a few moves behind in development and perhaps your opponent having a misplaced queen.

You can check out the gothamchess yt vid, it’s what I did. I mean you should always go to YouTube to try to find a solution in my opinion. It’s got me to where I am now.
