As it's been brought up, speed chess (bullet/blitz) can be harmful for long-term improvement. Rapid is generally recommended for chess improvement. Although controversial, I believe speed chess CAN be helpful for your chess, but only if utilized correctly and this is also dependent on current level of chess understanding.
What pretty much everyone agrees on is that speed chess is harmful when the player is often feeling rushed, or neglecting calculation and deeper thinking due to the limited time. You definitely want to avoid not knowing what to do, so you just play a move for the sake of moving (to not lose on time). That's bad because it creates a bad habit of just throwing something out there, rather than taking the time and effort to give it deeper consideration; this is very difficult to do under time pressure and exponentially so if a beginner to intermediate level player, because they don't yet have the pattern recognition to move that quickly with accuracy, nor the positional experience and understanding needed to navigate other tricky situations.
