Hello,

I am here to share my progress up until now and also to ask for advice as to how to keep improving at the same pace.

I started playing chess in June 2020, with a chess.com rating of around 400, Before this, I only briefly knew the rules of the game and had played a few games here and there in my childhood. On September 16th 2020, I achieved a rating of 1000+ in the 10+0 time control.

Here are some of the things I did to get there:

1) Play only 10-minute time control: I might have played a few bullet games here and there, but by far, my preferred time control has been 10+0. I feel It gives you enough time to calculate and doesn't make the game too boring for a beginner either.

2) Analyse critical games: I made it a point to analyse all the critical games I played to understand my mistakes and understand the game better.

3) Play often and Play Mindful: I made it a point to play at least a few games every day for regular improvement. Each game I would play, I would try not to blitz out the moves but to try and be a little mindful of the game.

4) Take breaks: That being said, taking breaks was crucial for me. I truly believe that true learning happens in a state of rest. I observed that over exhaustion led to me performing poorly and I made it a point to take a couple of days off every now and then to recharge my batteries and come back refreshed. I noticed that each time I returned after a break, I was considerably stronger even though I hadn't touched the game during the timeouts.

5) Learn one opening: I observed that playing a lot of openings with limited knowledge of each one led me hanging pieces and losing the mid-game. I decided to play one opening religiously and build knowledge of all the different lines in that opening. My opening choices were: Accelerated London System as white and Scotch Defense as black.

6) Constant Learning: I'll have to be honest, I didn't solve as many tactics, maybe 500 in total. But constant learning was always a theme for me. The usual way I learnt was through video learning. I watched a lot of chess streams including Hikaru's and Anish Giri's videos. I found that watching these streams introduced to new themes in chess that I otherwise wouldn't have found. I also looked at the analysis of a lot of chess games on various channels such as Agadmator and ChessBase India. My favourite till now has been linked below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at1G0CEHHws&ab_channel=thechesswebsite

7) Playing with family and friends: Playing the game with strangers over the internet can get a bit dull. I found that introducing my family and friends to the beautiful game of chess helped keep the game fun and interesting for me. I play OTB games when family or friends come over and thus I built a little community of chess around me which kept me from getting bored with the game.

My goal is to become a titled player as soon as possible, as outlandish as that sounds. I am writing this to ask for any helpful advice from stronger players or even titled ones themselves, that would help me achieve my goal.

Thanks

Until one is a beginnner he should play 15+10, I say you should play even longer 15+10 is the best.

Also the advise no 5 and 7 MAKE NO SENSE, also it does no good to you.

You mean by just playing 1 opening you would get FIDE ratings? Nope. That is the problem even I had faced when I was your level, playing just 1 opening will Ruin your game, learn many openings, try to understand their conecpt, its like if your opponent plays  1 e4, you know your stuff and the moment he plays 1 d4, you are like:

Also, YOU SAY THAT PLAYING WITH STRANGERS is not good?? AAAAAAAAAAAA

Playing with the same person is problem if you play with the same person again and again, YOU WILL NEVER improve. Play a lot of games with different stuff against different players.

Also one just can't play with family and friends, you have to play with better players. If you just play with friends then how would you improve?

Well, by watching streams you may improve but Not as Much as TACTICS, TBH half the amount you improve. You have to play more games and learn from them.

Well TBH, its good but 400-1000 is a easy journey, now you have reached the "Beginner" level which is 1000+, after a level of 1400- its starts becoming less.

rishabh11great

Your advise is GOOD but only for BEGINNERS.

rishabh11great

Tactics is the reason I improved from 1000 in start of lockdown (15March) to a rating of 1700 in just 7 months !! I have done a 9000 tactics and I recommend everyone to do a lot of tactics.

rishabh11great

400-1000= 1000-1300

1300-2000= 2000-2400

2400-2600 = 2750-2800

The Stronger you get the tougher it is, all the best for the rest, I hope my advise is useful happy.png

The Rating, how dont you know that you are 1600.

tacticspotter

no I mean what does the number to the left have to do with the number to the right unless that you tell me 400=1300=2000=2400=2600=2800 lol

rishabh11great

I am saying the progres

Reaching 400 to 1000 is as easy as reaching from 1000 to 1300.
