I spend a lot of time doing puzzles, and that really helped improve my chess. Also going out to physical tournaments and gathering experience. It really took a while for me and I'm still under 1000
If you're having trouble staying motivated, maybe make a challenge for yourself. Such as if you win 4 chess games in a certain amount of days you get a reward.
