Help, I can’t get my elo above 500

I’m 16 years old and I’ve been playing since august this year. I’ve definitely improved my playing a lot since then. I blunder less often, I try to control the center, and I know some openings and gambits. I don’t know why I’m plateauing here. I’m already planning to read some chess books. Is there anything else I can do to speed up the process? I don’t need to be a grandmaster, I just want to be a half-decent player.

What opening do you play?

Joyfulkokobop
I play French, Kings Gambit, and Sicilian usually
Compadre_J

- Kings Gambit is White opening

- French & Sicilian are Black opening against 1.e4

- You didn’t mention any openings against 1.d4

I can see why your struggling.

This is why you can’t improve for sure!

———————————

The Kings Gambit is a very risky white opening.

- Your suppose to use King Gambit as a surprise weapon in match games. You really shouldn’t be using it as your main white opening because it can cause you to lose to much which prevents your rating from increasing.

The Sicilian is to complex of a black opening.

- It is a top tier opening, but I never recommend it to beginners because a lot of beginners play Bc4 lines as white which can cause Black side players trouble if your go for a normal Sicilian line.

You also don’t seem to have an opening against 1.d4.

- You really need 1 ASAP. A lot of beginners like playing the London System as White so you really need openings to counter it.

——————————————

My Recommendation is the following:

Pick a new Main White Opening

- You want one which is Solid. Their are dozen different good options.

- You can use the Kings Gambit as a Second White Opening to beat Rematch Players!

You should 100% keep the French.

- The French is very strong in lower levels.

- Stop playing the Sicilian till you reach 1,400 or use can try using it as Second Opening to beat Rematch Players.

Pick a new Main Black Opening to counter 1.d4

- You have several good options.

——————————

This is why your rating isn’t increasing.

A lot of players at low level will give you free pieces for no reason at all.

You really don’t have to do anything.

You just have to make sure your pieces are defended and you just have to wait for them to self destruct.

Sicilian is a good opening but you should play the hyper accelerated Dragon Variation because it is a lot less complicated and learn how to play it and do not use the kings gambit and try to the dutch

Well I'm in the same boat!

BulletLover42

i actually started when i was 9 and stayed at 300 for a while, and then went offline for about two years and came back, and started watching gotham videos and learning more openings and destroyed everybody. if you dont think that with practice and learning when i was in the same 500 range i gained 300 elo in a week and a half check my account in rapid. btw if you like my account send me a friends request.

I looked at several of your losses. You gave away a free bishop, a free queen, and overlooked a mate in 1. You moved your f-pawn as black on move 2, which weakened your king position. You moved a bishop three times to get to a square it could have gone to in 1 move. You moved a pawn to d3 and then moved it a few moves later to d4. These are
Beginner’s mistakes.

At your level, you should not worry about learning opening sequences. You should focus on the basics.

Reading some instruction books would be a good idea. You will advance more quickly by learning basic opening principles from books than from games against other players at your level.

How i love to read all the responds to the asked question.. mostly in other games, when a newbie asking something, forget about giving any advice, yet got roasted instead but this..awesome.. 🙏

In your last loss, you literally ended up with more time on the clock than you started with in a rapid game, and it was a long game that went quite a few moves. You just have to play slower and actually think about your moves and your opponent’s moves. This is the answer for nearly everyone who posts similar questions here. Regardless of rating, almost everyone plays too quickly. Use your time. After you fix that, then you can worry about every single other part of the game, but if you aren’t thinking you aren’t trying and have no idea how good you really are.

This was your last lost game:

https://www.chess.com/game/live/128709799009?username=joyfulkokobop

You started the game with 15 minutes, and you ended it with a lot more more than 15 minutes. (There was increment).

No matter what happened in the game (you could win a piece or lose a piece), you just made a random move in a couple of seconds.

Don't do that. Don't play random moves. Use your time and think.

And of course right after posting this I proceed to play a few of the worst games I have ever played, which everyone can see, proving undeniably how much of a beginner I really am 😑

Anyway, thanks for helping, everyone. I’ll try my best to follow your advice 😊
