I'm a sixteen year old who has always been considered smart (IQ 140+) and who generally has good strategy. So why is chess so incredibly difficult for me? Do I have the wrong mindset or something? I want to improve desperately.

Chess, isn't a measure of intelligence, its a strategic game, its position awareness, tactics, trades, and learning various opening traps, a great deal of it is just photographic memory too. Point is many genius people still weren't GM level like people with a IQ of over 150. I also am starting to get very annoyed by the large number of people claiming a 140 IQ when its more likely 115 or lower in reality, because 150 puts you at Tessla level, and others, its weird like people who were at 100 started out saying 110, then 120,130, and now everyone is a Genius apparently...

the iq is a tested 141, but I now understand that it really has nothing to do with my success in chess
