Hint button gives bad advice?

Yeah it sometimes does

I've found that the "hint" button in games against the computer is often at odds with the "evaluation" bar. For example, the "evaluation" bar sometimes indicates a large but non-obvious (to me) advantage for me. But if I take the computer's "hint," the advantage evaporates. Don't know if this is a problem with the evaluation bar or the hint.

I have used the hint button and it has given me blunders and mistakes

Maybe the hint is to avoid using the hint button?

When playing against AI with analysis turned on and making the "hint" move, it will usually be average or good, but the analysis also instantly tells me what the best move would have been. Why is that not the hint?

Seems like the best way to learn against AI is to take a random move, see what it says the "perfect" move would have been, then take back your move and play the "perfect"

This is not only a bad idea, it is insane. The complete opposite is true. The best way to learn is to THINK on your moves, then make a move that you calculated to be best, then after the game check with the engine and see if you were right or wrong and why.

I assume the "hints' are generated by a computer or chess engine and that it should be illegal to use them in a real game whether you think they are accurate or not.

when I use it,it works and I win against the computer all the time like litery bro

"litery bro"?

I know that Chess.com gives less than useful hints on purpose. It's obvious to me because if I can set up the board or simply resign the game, go to analyze, switch the bot to 3200 and then switch sides the engine knows very well what the best move is. So that's what I do when I'm teaching myself because I don't know if there's a setting somewhere that would change the engine used for hints. The question I have is... Why would they do this on purpose? I can only speculate here so I'm going to just leave it there but it feels like somewhat of a betrayal, like someone gives you the wrong translation word when you're trying to learn a language and you find out the hard way in a real life conversation.

I was analyzing my game and was bummed that rook to B5, that I took some time to come up with, wasn't the best move. So I decided to play the position again against Maximum 3200, except this time I'd do Nd7 as suggested. Well then it said that Rb5 was the best move and I was like Doh! I tried switching sides and sure enough Max would also play Rb5 here. So am I supposed to double check every move of every game I analyze? Please, can someone square this up for me?

It's easy. Rb5 was picked by Game review as "best", but Game review is extremely shallow and bad, so it's not to be trusted.

After the engine thinks for more than 0.1 second, it realizes that Rb5 is not the best.

Anyway, in that position black is up 2 pieces. It absolutely doesn't matter what the best move is. Almost every legal move wins. It is completely pointless to analyze that position with an engine.

Thanks man, I appreciate the honest response.

I got bored and did my own little test of the hint to see how good it was just out of curiosity from watching bots play, it was so bad I ended up giving it 3 extra queens, only doing what hint recommends and it still managed to pull a draw after sacrificing all 4 queens for 1 single bishop
