how did i lose this?
It doesn't matter how much material you have. When your clock reaches 0:00 you lose. You ran out of time. The game ends.

But if your opponent has no possible way to checkmate in that position, it’s a draw.

Two ways you can win a game. 1: Checkmate your opponent. Obviously. 2: You run out of time. Each player gets 10 minutes total to decide what moves they want to make. If you run out of time, you lose. It's important to keep an eye on your clock, trust me, I understand its difficult to play offense, defense, AND keep an eye on your clock, but its all tied into the game play. I've won a lot of games when my opponent runs out of time. I've lost a lot of games when I run out of time. Sometimes, I win, and the clock is the only thing that saved me! As Bacon points out, it doesn't matter how much or how little pieces you have on the board, when you run out of time, it's game over for you, your opponent wins. Hope this helped clear up a little confusion.
but here is the most annoying thing. i lost even though the clock said 30 seconds left. wtf?
Lag...which does exist, depending on who you talk to.
Make sure you're using a current browser. I'm not sure if it will help the lag, but it certainly can't hurt.
Theres a lot of ways to help nullify lag. Don't keep other apps or programs running in the background. And on the browser make sure to only click one tab so the others do not load and slow you down. If you want to optimize even more, search it up and fiddle with the task manager.
Play long enough and you'll lose games due to your lag and steal games due to opponent's lag - among other frustrating ways to win and lose games...
First, don't get frustrated, it all evens out in the end.
Second, do your best to minimize it (play on the best connection you can, play on the best computer you can, get faster in sound openings to save as much time as you can, etc)
Third, if you don't like flagging on short time controls, play slower time controls. That's a better way for us lower rateds to be playing anyway - it's better for learning strategy and seeing tactics.
Cheers
