How do I become better with black?

I don't know why, but I lose MUCH more with black than with white. Check out my rapid statistics, 70% win rate as white and only 53% as black. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem as me and if someone knows the reason behind it.

I think its because, you defending with black and you should take advantages of your checks so you may change the fact you are being the attacked to be the attacker, trust me you not the only one. Im just rated under 1000 ELO and im 16 years old . But im just saying this to show that you not the only one. Practice with black. You'll be better at some point. 😊

I had pretty much the same issue, and figured it was because my opponents know common openings so much better than myself. Basically I get completely destroyed as black after 1.e4 1.e5, even by players who seem to be tactically weaker than myself (funnily I don't have the issue to the same extent after 1.d4).

I see essentially two ways out. Either you study openings yourself, or you start playing more or less obscure responses to 1.e4 right away (something like Nf6, Nc6, b6 or g6).

The latter is a bit of a lazy person's way out, and probably not the best way to improve your game long-term. But against other low-ranked players I found it to be quite effective. If they do not know the opening, much of their advantage with white is gone.
