How do you know Chess isn't for you?

I have adhd.

Don't worry play it if you enjoy it.

Playing games like sudoku and crosswords actually stave off dementia.

It's reasonable to assume that chess does the same.

It may be good for your adhd.

I admit I've noticed myself struggling with 'working' memory since I started playing chess seriously.

I can also Hyperfocus on it and not go to sleep.

And it gets me out of bed in the mornings and I usually play games when I'm making my breakfast and morning coffee. (On days when I need to get moving I listen to upbeat music).

Yes I've been 'addicted' since Queen's Gambit and I sometimes delete the app when I think it's getting out of hand.

But this is no different to any other game I enjoy on my iPhone.

I'm enjoying it and one day I may drop it when something else captures my intense focus.

Everyone goes through times of frustration with chess.

I'll add that adhd can be extremely frustrating at times.

Sometimes I really hate it.

Remember it's a spectrum disorder, ie. it manifests very differently in different people.

You see a little down on yourself.

Low self esteem is common in people with adhd.

But we are not lazy, we just struggle with focus.

Adhders work very hard and can excel in fields that interest them.

I learn about it and try different hacks until I find what helps me.

Howtoadhd is an excellent YouTube channel if you are looking for more resources.

Also plenty of people with adhd have high IQs.

You are not stupid or stubborn. Your brain just struggles with planning and when plans suddenly change you need extra time to process that.

It's easy to internalise the negative feedback you get. Self education and an adhd support group have helped me with that.
