I never studied openings (only when i played mistake in game i looked best move with stockfish), endgame theory and other stuff, did only 500 puzzles (on lichess), i only watched youtube and played games (over 1800 rapid games, i have more accounts) and that is how i got to 2000 elo. But now i am seing i need to study some stuff.

Just play lot of games.

I consider watching youtube studying just as much as studying from a book. Same with looking for the best move with stockfish after the game, it is studying. Everything that is not playing that you do to improve, is basically studying.

But i am just watching GothamChess recaps : D

Still studying. Pretty much it is the same as study of master games, even if it is less serious and there is more annoying shouting, clickbaits and other ”funny” stuff aimed at kids/youth, it is still studying.

BigChessplayer665

It's fake studying

It's more like learning somthing like an opening and try to mimic it studying is more like trying to review the games on your own and looking at all the tiny details

ChessGod6003

I think as far as super grandmaster. Playing games could be considered ‘studying’ and even more considered ‘studying’ if you actually use game review or just go over them yourself.

No such people error.

Just like any other language, English grew over time. It wasnt invented.

P.s.: Dammit I missed this was part of a joke train.

i think sky is the limit, how far somebody can go, but intentions to improve is that what makes a difference,

and how much time of your life you want to invest to adjust your brain to chess,

to recognise visual patterns..

yeah when game became sport then as in any sport, sacrifice is needed...

most don't want to do it hard,so for most it is still game ,not a sport.

So in the end we choose how far we will go...

Support, coach etc as in any sport give that extra push forward,to top.

But better to ask that question to top 10 players, and then see what is overlap in answers...

darkunorthodox88

with quite some talent, 1800 is not rare, 2000 is reaching the upper limits of chess redneck.

And how far is the sky? People have been to the Moon. Is that further or closer than the sky?

How about Mars? Proxima Centauri? Andromeda Galaxy? Closer, further? How far is the sky?

grew over time by english people

Let’s just say that what you are saying is a little bit more than a whole lot simplified. Just google it or go to the library and read about it.

Also if you take a look at old written English, do you notice you are actually disrespecting it yourself with your wrong spelling of nearly every word? They used to spell (and speak) it very different a long time ago.

See, language evolves with time, and so does spelling, and this makes your original argument very much meaningless.

How can I be disrespecting English if I'm English?

I don’t know, you seem like a natural talent.

You do understand that the English language, its inventors (which is a rather abstract concept) and the English people of today are three very different things? You probably don’t, but just think about it lad.

Aren't they just our ancestors?

Do you mean the people that came from Germany, or from the Neatherlands or perhaps the Vikings?

It is not nearly as simple as you think.

However I am absolutely sure that the inventors of the English language are not the people who live in England today for they would need to be hundreds of years old.

BigChessplayer665

Maybe even millenia

Kaon_497

If analysing with the computer is not part of studying, then I suppose all the way. That’s if you had endless time. But studying makes you learn faster because you don’t have to discover everything by yourself like alphazero.

People only say this about English because it's popular. Nobody would say this about Finnish.

Say what about Finnish?

I have no idea who invented the Finnish language, but I am sure it was before a nation called Finland existed and it was also before Finnish was spelled in any way whatsoever since it was first only spoken and only written later, like pretty much every language.

I mean you don't get people who say Finland didn't invent Finnish. But people say England didn't invent English.

Obviously Finland did not invent Finnish. The Finnish language existed before Finland existed.

Also languages are developed by people, not nations, so most definitely England did not invent English any more than Finland invented Finnish.

This is basic stuff.

BigChessplayer665

Most of the people ik that actually improve start studying at 1000+

Thechessplayer202020

You can go really, really far. If you're lucky enough, you might even oass the milky-way!

Yadav_Yogesh

my peak was 1000 without studying

Hoffmann713

Although the "results" I have achieved ( if we want to consider the rating as a measure of progress ) are decidedly modest, I think that most of them have been achieved through what we can call "study".

I've read some beginner's manuals ; I've followed about sixty ( excellent ) video lessons here on chesscom ( even if they are scored twice for some reason that has been explained to me but that I still don't understand well ); I've done the exercises ( thousands of puzzles ) ; Currently, I'm dedicating myself to the very pleasant study of Morphy's games. The only thing that has served me little or nothing is the time I have dedicated to openings ; But I don't deny it, because that was also very pleasant.

Considering that on average I devote no more than an hour a day to chess, I practically spent this time more studying than playing. I think that if I had just played with the same time, I'd be even a more modest player than I am now.

And I'm afraid that from this point on, in order to improve appreciably, it would be necessary to start studying really seriously, and devote a lot of time. Which is unfortunately impossible.

In any case, however you feel about its usefulness, studying is always good. It broadens horizons.

To be fairly honest, if youre OTB, get a coach or do some puzzle books. They helped me alot and im around 1800 OTB now. Theres also alot of other stuff but yk.
